“The CRISPR Whisperer Picture Series” is a free-to-download series of 15 episodes that marry art and science in a humorous, hands-on romp designed to spark creativity in an easy-to-understand introduction to the exciting new DNA editing tool called CRISPR.

The series focuses on CRISPR’s applications to science and biotechnology, while fostering critical thinking; as well as encouraging greater diversity in the sciences. The educational focus: to make cutting-edge science more accessible and engaging for people of all ages, from 11 to 111.

The CRISPR Whisperer Picture Series and author Dr. Semenow are featured in a January 2026 Spotlight interview with PGED (Personal Genetics Education & Dialogue), founded in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School.

The CRISPR Whisperer Picture Series

Dorothy Semenow and the talented CRISPR Whisperer Team of artists/graphic designers—Jane Burns, Dave Wheeler, and Eric Hansen—present a fun, colorful, and easy-to-understand series about the DNA editing tool known as CRISPR.

CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) is the amazing revolutionary tool that can add, delete, or change DNA at precise locations. Its use allows scientists to figure out what specific genes do, cure diseases (such as sickle cell), resurrect extinct animals (such as the dire wolf) or create their proxies, eliminate animal and plant pests, improve crop nutrition and sustainability, and modify microbes to perform useful industrial tasks (like preventing viruses from destroying yogurt cultures). Some of this has already been accomplished, and the rest is on the way.

The goal: to make cutting-edge science more accessible and engaging for all ages (11 to 111), while fostering critical thinking and sparking those so-inclined to use their creativity to pass on what they learn—and spread laughter all along the way!

Dr. Dorothy Semenow (Wikipedia), is a pioneering American chemist, psychologist, and women’s rights advocate, famous for being the first woman to earn a degree [PhD] from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1955. She specialized in physical organic chemistry and holds two doctorates, including a second in psychology from Claremont Graduate University. Dorothy is known for her advocacy for women in science, civil justice, and increasing science literacy.
